Occupier Requirements
Aldi
Aldi is currently the fourth largest supermarket chain in the UK and fourth largest in Ireland. Aldi is set to invest over £300 million in upgrading and extending existing UK stores in 2026, as part of its continued commitment to investing in Britain. This announcement comes on top of Aldi's recent £370 million commitment to opening 40 new stores in 2026 and reflects the supermarket's continued focus on strengthening both its new and existing store estate.
This strategy is underpinned by high-performing individual stores across the UK. They have ambitious acquisition and development plans and prefer to purchase freehold, town centre or edge of centre sites suitable for property development in towns with a population of 15,000 or more. They are also willing to explore all opportunities, including developer led schemes and existing or new retail units. Their investment yield profile is increasingly adding value to developments.
Ideally these sites will be located on principal roads with prominent main road frontages. Aldi prefer to purchase freehold, green field or brown field, town or edge of centre sites suitable for a new Aldi store - generally this tends to require sites of circa 1.75 acres - but they are also prepared to take leases on stores within new developments. Aldi's standard requirement is for stores of 18 - 20,000 sq ft with 120 adjacent and dedicated car parking spaces.
